No. 10 DePauw Hands Spartan Women First Loss of Season, 5-4

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – In a matchup of unbeaten teams, No. 10 nationally-ranked DePauw University handed the Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team its first loss of 2012-13 via a 5-4 decision on Saturday evening inside the Lilly Center.

The Spartans, ranked No. 7 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region, fall to 6-1 overall. DePauw, the No. 2-ranked team regionally, improves to 3-0 following a similar 5-4 result earlier in the day versus University Athletic Association opponent and No. 13 nationally-ranked Washington University-St. Louis.

Opening with doubles action, the Tigers grabbed a 2-1 lead as the No. 1 duo of senior Erika Lim (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton Union) and freshman Sara Zargham (Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Sciences) earned the lone Spartan point via an 8-6 victory versus Caroline Emhardt and Maggie MacPhail.

In singles play, a pair of regionally-ranked opponents matched up in the No. 1 slot as Zargham, ranked No. 4, was victorious with a three-set 6-2, 5-7, 10-6 victory versus MacPhail, the region's No. 7 player. Lim grabbed the third Spartan point with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 versus Meg Crowley, while freshman Taylor Sweeney, the region's No. 22-ranked player, garnered a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win at No. 3 versus Claire Marshall.

However, DePauw sealed the match with the final three points in singles play.

The Spartans are right back in action at DePauw on Sunday, February 24 versus Washington U. at 2:30 p.m.
