BELLEVILLE, Ill. – The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team was swept, 9-0, by No. 4 nationally-ranked University of Chicago (IL) in the opening round of the 2011 University Athletic Association Championship on Friday, April 22.
The seventh-seeded Spartans (8-7 overall) will now move on to the consolation bracket versus either sixth-seeded Brandeis University (MA) or third-seeded Carnegie Mellon University (PA) on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. (CDT) at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
Chicago (15-2 overall) swept the Spartans in doubles action, with Case's No. 1 duo of sophomores Erika Lim (Fullerton, CA/Fullerton Union) and Emily Pham (Mason, OH/William Mason) putting up the longest fight in an 8-4 decision.
The Maroons also swept singles play as the Spartans could only muster five points.
The Spartans need a victory in tomorrow's first match to play in the fifth-place match at 5 p.m. (CDT). A loss would send the Spartans to the seventh-place match.
