Spartan Women's Tennis Wins Tight Dual Match with Oberlin, 5-4

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Sophomore Kathleen Evers (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame) won the deciding tilt at fifth singles to lead the Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team to a 5-4 win over visiting Oberlin College at the Carlton Courts on Saturday, October 16. The Spartans finished off the fall season with a 3-0 record in dual match play.

After six points, Oberlin led Case 4-2 with just three matches left to play. The Spartans won all three of those points to take the match and cement a perfect 3-0 fall record.

At first singles, sophomore Erika Lim (Fullerton, CA/Fullerton Union) closed out Farah Leclercq 7-6, 6-4, while freshman Bianca Patel (Cincinnati, OH/Syracuse) won a three-setter in the four spot, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, to tie the match.

"Erika finished out relatively close," said head coach Todd Wotjkowski. "We were looking at being down 4-3 with two third sets left, but Bianca stepped up to an early lead and never looked back."

Evers, competing at fifth singles, won her first set, 7-6, before dropping set two, 4-6. With the deciding point on the line, the sophomore rolled to a 6-3 win in the third set to close out the Yeowomen.

"It was 4-4 and Kat was up 4-2," said Wotjkowski. "She did a great job keeping her focus and finished the match, clinching the win as captain today. Stepping up as a leader on this team, it was a huge win for Kat."

Case scored its other two points in the doubles matches, where Evers teamed up with freshman Kara Richardson (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) to defeat Finley Gates and Brenna Sheldon by a score of 8-6. Patel and freshman Evelyn Qi (Tampa Bay, FL/C. Leon King) cruised at third doubles, defeating Preeya Shah and Julie Christensen, 8-1.

The Spartans next match will not take place until February 4, 2011, when the team will travel to the University of Notre Dame's Eck Tennis Center to face off with the University of Chicago at 6:00 p.m.
