ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team won its first match of the weekend, 5-1, over New York University in the seventh-place match of the 2011 University Athletic Association Championship on Saturday, April 23. With the win, the Spartans clinched seventh-place for their best finish at the tournament since 2004.
The Spartans finish the season with a 9-8 record in dual match play, while the Violets dropped to 1-11.
Case got off to a 2-1 start in doubles play, where sophomore Kathleen Evers (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame) and freshman Kara Richardson (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) picked up an 8-2 win at the two spot. Erika Lim (Fullerton, CA/Fullerton Union) and Emily Pham (Mason, OH/William Mason) also won their matchup at first doubles by a score of 8-3.
Pham won by default at second singles to extend the lead and sophomore Bianca Patel (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) scored a 6-1, 6-1 win at the four to bring Case within a point of the win. Lim then finished off the Violets with a 6-0, 6-4 win at the top spot.
