Senior Suhan Mestha of the Case Western Reserve University women's swimming and diving team placed third in the 100-yard freestyle to lead the Spartan women to a sixth-place finish, while the men also placed sixth, at the 2019 University Athletic Association Championships in Chicago, Illinois on Saturday.
Mestha placed third in the 100-yard freestyle with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 51.19. The All-UAA honor is her second of the meet, as she also earned All-UAA honors for her third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke on Friday.
The Spartan women scored 697 points to finish sixth overall in the team standings. Emory won the meet with 1,943 points, Chicago finished second with 1,484.5 points, and New York University finished third with 1,370.5 points. On the men's side, CWRU placed sixth with 659 points, while Emory won the meet with 1,848 points. Washington (Mo.) claimed second with 1,454.5 points and Chicago finished third with 1,299.5 points.
The Spartan women were also strong in the 1,650-yard freestyle as freshman Sarah Krueger finished 13th (18:02.22), senior Kelsey Holmberg placed 14th (18:17.49) and freshman Kate Ptashnik claimed 15th (18:28.12) in the event.
Top performances for the men on Saturday included the 400-yard freestyle relay team of freshmen Neil Wible, Calvin Tecson, Alec Johnson and Nicholas Schoenig finishing sixth in the event with a time of 3:06.63. Senior Keith Erichsen also added a 13th place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 16:11.36.
Individually, sophomore Will McDonald finished 11th in the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.42), sophomore Dakota Weinman placed 15th in the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.20), Tecson placed 15th in the 100-yard freestyle (46.84), senior Brody Schmidt finished 16th in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.38), sophomore Jakob Woerner placed 14th in the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.51) and freshman Michael Clough finished 15th in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.34).
The Spartans will now turn their attention towards the Midwest Invitational, hosted by the University of Chicago. They will once again travel to Chicago, Illinois from Friday, February 22nd through Saturday, February 23rd. Competition is set to begin Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. ET.
