The Case Western Reserve University swimming and diving teams each picked up wins in their season-opening competition on Saturday, with the women claiming a 216-80 win over John Carroll University, and the men earning a 153-147 victory against the Blue Streaks.
Three Spartan women claimed wins in multiple events on Saturday. Senior Suhan Mestha won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.63 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 53.96 seconds. Senior Bhavya Kumaran finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.38) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.04), while freshman Sarah Krueger won the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.01) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:30.52).
Also notching top finishes in the events for the Spartan women were junior Olivia Picchione in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.40), freshman Anna Smith in the 100-yard butterfly (59.82), junior Adi Alkalay in the one-meter dive (167.35 points) and freshman Hailey Seibert in the three-meter dive (175.80 points). CWRU also had a first-place finish from its women's 200-yard medley relay team Mestha, Kumaran, Olivia Picchione and senior Alli Drohosky (1:51.00), as well as their 200-yard freestyle relay team of Mestha, Kumaran, Krueger and junior Rhiannon Reese (1:40.32).
For the men, sophomore Sean Twomey won the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:11.87 and the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:59.78. Sophomore Will McDonald added first place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (53.38) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:58.35).
Other first-place finishes for the CWRU men includes sophomore Jakob Woerner in the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.65) and freshman Nicholas Schoenig in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.71).
The Spartans will be back in action next weekend, facing Carnegie Mellon University in the Veale Natatorium on Saturday, October 27th at 1:00 p.m.
