Spartan Swimmers & Divers Defeat Oberlin to Capture Cleveland City Tournament Title

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's swimming & diving teams combined to defeat Oberlin College, 379-212, in the Championship Finals of the Cleveland City Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Carr Pool.

The No. 6 nationally-ranked Spartan men improve to 7-0 in dual meets, while the No. 16 Spartan women move to 4-3.

On the men's side, junior Gus Bailey (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) was a part of four event victories. He touched the wall first in both the 50-yard freestyle (21.90) and the 100 free (49.05).

During relay events, the third-year Spartan teamed with sophomore Andrew Bollinger (Boulder, Colo./Fairview), junior Sean Nickley (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and sophomore Elliott Kerbel (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) to stop the clock at 1:36.87 in the 200 medley relay.

In the final event of the dual, Kerbel, juniors Scott McHenry (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), and Bailey beat the field home by more than 10 seconds in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:17.66.

Other double-winners were Hudgins in the 200 free (1:48.27) and the 500 free (5:03.80), as well as Nickley in 100 breaststroke (59.14) and 200 breaststroke (2:12.89).

Overall, the Spartan men were victorious in 13 of the 16 events contested.

On the women's side, juniors Sara Tillie (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Maggie Dillione (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) each won two individual events.

Tillie took first in the 200 free (2:00.54) and the 400 individual medley (4:55.01). Dillione was victorious in the 100 free (54.83) and 200 butterfly (2:09.47).

In relays, the Spartans opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley behind the team of freshman Rachael Loek (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South), sophomore Brianna Cain (Perry, Ohio/Perry), freshman Rebecca Pakradooni (Martinez, Ga./Lakeside) and Dillione with a time of 1:55.06.

The Spartans return to action in a quad-meet at Kenyon College next Saturday, November 17 at 1:00 p.m.
