The CWRU women's soccer seniors and their parents celebrate 'Senior Day' at DiSanto Field

In the final match of the regular season, the 21st ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team fell to No. 25 Carnegie Mellon University 3-1 at DiSanto Field on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Spartans fall to 13-5-0 on the season and 2-5-0 in the University Athletic Association. The Tartans improve to 11-5-1 and 4-3-0 in the UAA.

Senior forward Kimberly Chen scored the lone Spartans' goal in the 89th minute with an assist from senior midfielder Jennifer Markley. Markley passed the ball to Chen at the edge of the box, and she shot it past the diving goalkeeper for the score. The goal was Chen's seventh of the season and the assist was Markley's first of the year.

In the 15th minute, a goal from first-year forward Helena Spencer gave CMU an early 1-0 lead with her fourth goal of the season.

The Tartans doubled their advantage in the 74th minute when first-year forward Alex Adams scored her 11th goal of the season on a breakaway.

Case Western Reserve's best chance to tie the score came a few minutes earlier when first-year midfielder Merry Meyer took a shot and hit the crossbar. Sophomore midfielder Anika Washburn collected the miss, but her shot was blocked, and the ball was sent away.

Sophomore midfielder Marissa McAfee scored the Tartans' third goal of the afternoon in the 83rd minute.

Washburn led the team with four shots, and Chen had a team-leading two shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Lauren Unterborn registered eight saves in goal.

Before the match, the team celebrated its five senior members—Chen, defender Mary Kate Ford, student coach Isabel Kazour, Markley, and Unterborn—in a special on-field ceremony for their strong play, leadership, and dedication to the program over the last four years.

The match concludes the regular season for the Spartans. The team now waits to see if it will be one of the at-large teams selected to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship tournament. The NCAA will reveal the bracket on Monday, November 11 at 1 p.m. during a live show that will be broadcast on NCAA.com. A link to the selection show will be posted to athletics.case.edu once it is made available.
