Sophomore midfielder Anika Washburn of the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team has been named the University Athletic Association women's soccer offensive athlete of the week as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Washburn led the 10th-ranked Spartans to two wins in as many games this week, as she gathered three goals for six points. In CWRU's 3-1 win over Kenyon on Wednesday, Washburn scored the second goal of the game in the 55th minute as she took a pass from freshman Aniya Hartzler about 25 yards away from the goal and struck a line shot into the top corner of the goal. She followed that performance on Sunday with two more goals to lead the Spartans to a 3-1 win over John Carroll. Washburn scored in the 24th minute off an assist from Harzler and then tallied her second goal of the match in the 79th minute via an assist from sophomore Greta Lazzara.
For the season, Washburn leads the team with 20 points on eight goals and four assists. She also currently leads all University Athletic Association players in points (20), ranks tied for first in goals (8), tied for fourth in assists (4) and second in shots (39). With the two wins, the Spartans (9-0-0) extended their winning streak to nine matches to start the season.
This was Washburn's second career UAA Athlete of the Week honor.
The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team will now take their winning streak into University Athletic Association play with a trip to New York City on Saturday, October 5th to take on New York University (7-2). The match will kick off at 5:30 p.m.
