On a rain-soaked Sunday afternoon in University Heights, Ohio, the 10th ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team defeated John Carroll University 3-1. With the win, the Spartans (9-0-0) extended their winning streak to nine matches to start the season. The Blue Streaks dropped to 4-3-2 with the loss.
Sophomore Anika Washburn scored her team-leading seventh and eighth goals of the season to lead the Spartans past the Blue Streaks.
In the 24th minute, Washburn scored her first goal to double the Spartans' advantage. Freshman Aniya Hartzler drew the Blue Streaks' goalkeeper away from the net and took a shot across the goal. She missed, but Washburn was there to collect the ball and finish for the goal. It's Hartzler's fourth assist of the season.
Sophomore Greta Lazzara crossed a pass into the center of the box and found Washburn for her second goal of the match in the 79th minute. She shot the ball in the lower right corner of the goal and scored, increasing the Spartan lead to 3-1. It was Lazzara's first collegiate assist.
Just a few minutes before Washburn's first goal, senior Kimberly Chen put the Spartans on the board first. Freshman Merry Meyer lobbed the ball into the box and a charging Chen shot the ball into the back of the net. It was Chen's fifth goal of the season and 17th of her career. It was Meyer's fourth assist of the season.
Freshman Grace Monnin gave the Blue Streaks a first half goal in the 36th minute on an assist from senior Jaclyn Audino.
Despite the goal, Case Western Reserve dominated possession throughout the match, keeping the ball on the John Carroll side of the field for most of the 90 minutes. The Spartans outshot the Blue Streaks 24-7 and registered 12 shots on goal to the Blue Streaks' three.
Senior goalkeeper Lauren Unterborn preserved the Spartans' lead in the 76th minute with an impressive jumping save on a long distance shot. For the match, she registered two saves and earned her eighth win of the season.
The Spartans take their winning streak into University Athletic Association play with a trip to New York City on Saturday, October 5 to take on New York University (7-2). The match will kick off at 5:30 p.m.
