No. 13 Women’s Soccer to Face Two In-State Foes before UAA Play

Following their seventh straight win to open the season, the 13th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team will face two more non-conference opponents before University Athletic Association play begins. On Wednesday, September 25th, the Spartans will host Kenyon College at DiSanto Field at 7:30 p.m. Case Western Reserve then travels a short distance to University Heights, Ohio to face John Carroll University on Sunday, September 29th at 2:00 p.m.

#13 CWRU Spartans (7-0-0)

The Spartans struck for three goals in the second half in a resounding 3-1 win over Ohio Northern University at home on Friday night. Senior Kimberly Chen opened the scoring in the 58th minute, and freshmen Maia Sethi and Merry Meyer scored within minutes of each other in the second half. ONU added a 90th minute goal on a penalty kick to break up the shutout.

Sophomore Anika Washburn leads the team with 5 goals and 14 points this season. Washburn, Chen, and sophomore Christina Hickson each have a team-leading four assists.

Kenyon College Ladies (3-4-0)

Kenyon split their two matches this past week, losing 4-0 at Capital University and defeating Franklin College at home 3-2.

Senior Fallon Raviol leads the Ladies with four goals and nine points and has two multi-goal matches this season. Senior Jillian Countey and freshman Erika Freiberg have split time in goal for Kenyon. Combined they have 31 saves and allowed 2.57 goals on average.

The Spartans and Ladies have battled 33 times in their history, with CWRU holding a 14-13-6 advantage. In the teams' last matchup, a season opening 2-1 win for Kenyon last year, Christina Hickson scored the Spartans' only goal. 

John Carroll University Blue Streaks (3-2-2)

The Blue Streaks tied both of the matches last week with both going the full two overtime periods. They drew 2-2 against Allegheny College in Pennsylvania last Wednesday and drew 0-0 with Hope College on Saturday in Michigan. JCU will travel to Ohio Wesleyan University on Tuesday to face the Bishops before hosting the Spartans the following Sunday.

Leading the Blue Streaks' offense is senior Jaclyn Audino with three goals and four assists. Sophomore Brittany Dufalla has also added a team-leading four goals. Sophomore Danielle DelGiudice and freshman Mackenzie Stease have combined to save 32 shots and allow just 1.44 goals on average.

Case Western Reserve is 14-7-2 in the all-time series with JCU, dating back to 1990. The teams last faced off in 2018, with the Spartans coming away with a 3-0 home victory. Junior Lizzie Barna, Kimberly Chen, and Christina Hickson each had a goal in the victory.

The Spartans' ranking of 13th is tied for their highest ever in the United Soccer Coaches poll…CWRU leads the UAA in goals per game (4.14) and is tied for the lead in goals allowed average (0.42)...Freshman Aniya Hartzler leads the team and the UAA with a 0.571 shot percentage…The team's seven straight wins to start a season is one away from the record set by the 2002 squad…CWRU needs two goals to tie the 2010 and 2002 teams for most goals in a season (31).
