Chen’s ‘Golden Goal’ Leads #22 Women’s Soccer Past Adrian

The 22nd-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team traveled to Adrian, Michigan on Sunday evening and defeated Adrian College 3-2 in double overtime.

The victory extended the Spartans' (6-0-0) winning streak to six to begin the season, continuing their best start to a campaign since 2002. The Bulldogs dropped to 4-2-1 with the loss.

On the opening kickoff of the second overtime, the Spartans were on the attack. Not even a minute into the period, sophomore Christina Hickson shot the ball from the center of the box that was saved and deflected by the Adrian goalkeeper. Senior Kimberly Chen raced down the left side of the field, reached the ball before any Bulldog, and pushed it past a diving goalkeeper to win the match in the 101st minute. It was the second goal of the match for Chen and her third of the season. Hickson was credited with an assist, her fourth of the year.

At the very beginning of the second half, Chen scored her first goal to give the Spartans a 2-0 advantage. She sent a ball into the box in the 46th minute looking for her teammate, but an Adrian defender deflected it into the goal.

In the first half, Case Western Reserve had limited opportunities but finally broke through in the 26th minute on a corner kick. Freshman Merry Meyer directed the ball toward the center of the eight yard box, and sophomore Kat Rebele was right there to head the ball past the Adrian goalkeeper to give the Spartans the advantage. It was Rebele's first collegiate goal and Meyer's third assist on the season.

The Spartan defense held up against a relentless Bulldog attack throughout the first half. Adrian attempted 10 shots and earned four corners in the half but could not get the ball past senior goalkeeper Lauren Unterborn and the Case Western Reserve defense.

However, Adrian became the first team to score against Case Western Reserve this season on a goal from sophomore McKenna Mahoney in the 55th minute. The goal ended the Spartans' streak of 504 minutes without conceding a goal to start the season.

The Bulldogs then tied the match in the 73rd minute with a goal by senior Caroline Fleming.

Just a few minutes later, sophomore Anika Washburn nearly pushed Case Western Reserve ahead. She took a free kick just outside the box in the center of the field but hit the crossbar. The Spartans had a final chance to win the game in regulation in the 90th minute when Hickson laced a shot across the goal but hit the far post as time expired.

Chen, Meyer, and Washburn led the team with three shots each, with all of Chen's shots ending up on goal. Unterborn (5-0-0) finished the game with four saves.

Case Western Reserve will now return home and look to stay unbeaten on Friday, September 20th when they host Ohio Northern University (3-1-2) at DiSanto Field. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
