On a rain-soaked Wednesday night at DiSanto Field, the #22 Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team defeated Albion College 4-0. The shutout extended the Spartans' streak of consecutive shutouts to five to start the season, for a total of 450 minutes of scoreless soccer.
The win improved the Spartans record to 5-0, their best start to a season since the 2002 campaign. With the loss, Albion drops to 3-2.
Sophomore Christina Hickson led the Spartan attack with two second half goals, increasing her season total to four, striking first in the 51st minute and then in the 81st minute.
The first goal for Hickson came following an Albion foul. Sophomore Anika Washburn quickly took the ensuing free kick, but the goalkeeper was able to stop the shot. However, she was unable to hold onto the slippery ball. Hickson, right in front of the keeper, tapped the ball into the net for the goal. For Washburn, it was her third assist on the year.
Hickson's second goal came on a pass from freshman Merry Meyer inside the box to increase the Spartans' lead to four. It was Meyer's second assist this season.
The Spartans' first goal came in the 22nd minute. Senior Kimberly Chen directed a corner kick from the right side of the field and into the box. There to head it past the Albion goalkeeper was sophomore Lizzie White for her second goal of the season. For Chen, it was her team-leading fourth assist this year.
Case Western Reserve ended the first half on a high note. With less than two minutes to go in the half, freshman Aniya Hartzler connected with freshman Maia Sethi, running past a defender in the middle of the box. Sethi contained the pass and pushed the ball into the back of the net for her first career goal, doubling the Spartans' advantage.
Senior Lauren Unterborn led the Spartans defense, collecting her fourth win and her third clean sheet of the season with one save during the match. Starting defenders for Case Western Reserve were White, freshman Laura Gorjanc, sophomore Kat Rebele, and junior Bailey George.
The Spartans look to extending both their winning and shutout streaks when they travel to Adrian, Michigan on Sunday, September 15 to face Adrian College (3-1-1). The match will kick off at 5 p.m.
