Spartan Women Continue Early Success, Shutout Streak in Win at Penn St.-Behrend

The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team continued its early season dominance with a 3-0 victory over Penn State Behrend at Behrend Fields in Erie, Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon. The win is the Spartans' fourth straight (4-0) to start the season. The loss drops the Lions to 0-4.

The shutout is also the fourth straight for the Spartans. The team has yet to concede a goal in 360 minutes this season.

The Spartans started the match with an early goal. The team attacked the Lions' defense and, after a few shots, freshman Johanna Dunkers found the back of the net in the third minute for her fourth goal of the season.

Case Western Reserve's defense continued its early season success as well. The unit allowed just two shots in the first half and two in the second half, stymying Penn State Behrend throughout the game. Possession was on the Lions' side of the field throughout the match as the Spartans' offense applied consistent pressure.

Freshman Aniya Hartzler converted a penalty kick to double the Case Western Reserve lead in the 42nd minute. It was her fourth goal of the season. Hartzler was taken down in the box following a long run toward the goal and scored from the spot.

Case Western Reserve added to their lead in the 75th minute. Senior Kimberly Chen crossed a corner kick into the box from the left side of the field, and sophomore Christina Hickson placed the ball past the goalkeeper for a 3-0 lead. It was Hickson's second goal of the season and Chen's third assist this year.

Junior Lauren Metz (3-0) started the match in goal but left in the 35th minute due to injury. She was replaced by senior Lauren Unterborn who completed the clean sheet with an impressive save in the 90th minute.

Leading the team in shots was Chen with six. She and Hickson both put a team-leading three shots on goal.

The Spartans return home and look to continue their shutout streak on Wednesday, September 11th for a weeknight match against Albion College (3-1). Kickoff at DiSanto Field is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
