Spartans Open Simonetti Era with Road Win

The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team opened the 2019 season with a 4-0 win over Oberlin College on Friday night in Oberlin, Ohio. 

The win was the first for head coach Jen Simonetti at Case Western Reserve.

The Spartans struck first in the 11th minute on the foot of sophomore midfielder Anika Washburn, the first goal of her collegiate career. Sophomore forward Christina Hickson assisted on the goal.

The breakthrough followed a flurry of Spartan shots. Oberlin's goalkeeper saved freshman midfielder Johanna Dunkers' shot, and Washburn followed with a shot wide of the goal. 

Senior forward Kimberly Chen doubled the Spartans' advantage with a 25th minute goal. Washburn assisted on the goal, the first assist of her career. The goal followed a saved Washburn shot.

In the second half, freshman forward Aniya Hartzler netted her first collegiate goal. Her unassisted strike in the 52nd minute increased the Spartans' lead to three.

The Spartans' final goal of the match was scored by Washburn off a Case Western Reserve corner kick. The unassisted goal was her second of the game.

Senior goalkeeper Lauren Unterborn picked up her first win and clean sheet of the season, blocking one shot during the match.

Overall, Case Western Reserve outshot Oberlin 15-5, with 10 shots on goal, and attempted nine corner kicks to Oberlin's one.

The Spartans will host SUNY Fredonia (0-1) on Sunday in their home-opening match of the 2019 campaign. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at DiSanto Field.
