2018 CWRU Women’s Soccer Season Recap

2018 CWRU Women’s Soccer Season Recap

The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team was paced by a solid defense throughout the year, finishing the campaign with seven victories.

The Spartans completed the 2018 season with a 7-10-0 overall record, including a 5-4-0 record at home. This marks the third time over the past four years that CWRU has finished the year with a winning record at home.

Led by All-University Athletic Association Second Team selection in sophomore Bailey George, the Spartans' defense yielded just 23 goals in 17 games and shutout seven opponents during the season. CWRU held opponents to averages of 7.5 shots on goal per game, and 15.6 total shots per contest.

Offensively, eight different CWRU players scored at least one goal during the campaign, and nine players registered at least a point for the balanced Spartan attack. Freshman All-UAA Second Team selection Christina Hickson led the squad with a team-high eight goals and one assist for a team-best 17 points. Her eight goals are tied for the 10th-most by a CWRU player in a single season. Junior All-UAA honorable mention pick Kimberly Chen started all 17 games and finished as the team leader in assists (4) and shots (30), while also ranking second on the team in goals (6).

Adding to the team's defensive strength was sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Metz, who turned in a career year, finishing the season with a 1.40 goals against average. She started 17 games for the team, recording four individual shutouts and 88 saves during her sophomore season as a Spartan, including 10 games with five saves or more. Metz also received UAA Defensive Athlete of the Week honors on September 24th and October 22nd.

Junior Mary Kate Ford and freshman Kat Rebele also played key roles on the Spartans defense in 2018. Ford appeared in all 17 games, including 17 starts as a defender. Rebele played in 17 games and made 15 starts during her first year as a Spartan.

CWRU allowed just three goals through their first seven games of the season, opening the year with a 5-2 record. Included in that stretch was a 1-0 overtime win against Chatham University and a 1-0 overtime victory over the College of Wooster. Hickson struck for the game-winning goal against Chatham in the 93rd minute of play, while senior Emily Dickens hit the game-winning score against Wooster in the 97th minute of play.

The Spartans also proved to be a challenge to the nation's top ranked team at the time of play. In the second conference matchup at home, CWRU hung tight with then first-ranked Washington University (Mo.), which finished in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships, before falling 2-0 on a goal in each half by the Bears.

In addition to the team's success on the field, the Spartans excelled in the classroom as well in 2018. The squad received the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award with a 3.55 grade point average during the academic year, while 14 members of the team – sophomore Megan Arumpanayil, sophomore Lizzy Barna, Chen, sophomore Abbey Dungan, Dickens, Ford, George, sophomore Emily Hauser, senior Melanie Kukura, Metz, junior Ana Petropoulos, sophomore Ali Sivilotti, senior Maggie Tyma and junior Lauren Unterborn – received UAA All-Academic honors.
