Spartan Women Shut Out Wash. & Jeff. 3-0 on Sunday

Three different Spartans scored a goal as the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team earned a 3-0 win over the Washington & Jefferson College Presidents in Washington, Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon.

With the win the Spartans improve to 5-2-0 on the season, while the Presidents drop to 2-5-1 on the 2018 campaign. The 5-2-0 record for the Spartans is the best start through seven games for the program since the 2011 season when the team began the season with a 5-1-1 record.

CWRU began its scoring early in the first half on Sunday, when senior midfielder Emily Dickens launched a shot off of a free kick just outside the box that gave the Spartans a lead at the 3:40 mark. The score was Dickens' third of the season.

The Spartans would add to their lead less than six minutes later when senior forward Melanie Kukura made a spin move outside the box and struck a shot into the bottom right corner of the net for her first goal of the campaign.

CWRU capped of its scoring in the 27th minute of play when freshman forward Ella Copich recorded her first collegiate goal of her career after she found a loose ball in the box and laced the ball past the Presidents' goalkeeper.

Overall, CWRU outshot W&J 18-9, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Spartans also held the advantage in corner kicks, 4-3. Kukura led the squad with four shots, while senior forward Maggie Tyma registered three to the team total.

Sophomore Lauren Metz started and earned the win to improve to 5-2-0 on the season. She made one save during her 45 minutes of action. Junior Lauren Unterborn played 34 minutes of the second half and freshman Jenna Ruccolo played the final 11 minutes of the half.

Case Western Reserve returns to action on Tuesday, September 25th, when the team returns home to face Denison University. The match is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. on DiSanto Field.
