Case Western Reserve University freshman Christina Hickson connected on a 'golden goal' in the first overtime period on Saturday afternoon to give the Spartans a 1-0 win over Chatham University.
The Spartans improved to 3-2-0 on the season, while Chatham drops to 3-2-0.
The game was scoreless throughout regulation, before Hickson struck for the game-winning score, her fifth of the season, with just 7:19 left to play in the first overtime period. The freshman launched a shot from the right side of the box that evaded the Chatham goalkeeper and found the back of the goal for the match-clinching score. Senior forward Kimberly Chen was credited with the assist after she made a perfect pass to Hickson to set up the goal.
It marked the first game-winning overtime goal by a CWRU women's soccer player since Abby DeCicco tallied the game-winner against Allegheny College in the first overtime period on September 9th, 2017.
CWRU withstood the Chatham attack throughout the entire game. The Spartans were led by the outstanding play of sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Metz who recorded five saves.
The Spartans are back in action on Tuesday, September 18th, taking on the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio. The game is slated for a 4:00 p.m. start.
