Spartan Women Battle to 1-1 Double OT Tie with Rochester

The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie in double-overtime against the University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon in Rochester, New York.

The draw brings the Spartans 2016 ledger to 5-5-4 overall and 0-2-2 in the UAA, while the Yellowjackets now stand at 2-6-5 overall and 1-2-1 in the UAA.

The Spartans took the early lead in the match on junior midfielder Neha Cheemalavagu's third goal of the season. Cheemalavagu struck in the fifth minute of action, putting CWRU in front 1-0. Sophomore midfielder Melanie Kukura and senior forward Amy Lindberg were each credited with an assist on the play.

Rochester evened the score in the 12th minute on a goal from McKenzie Runyan, assisted by Kim Stagg and Jean Chakmakas.

Both defenses would hold strong for the rest of regulation and both overtime periods, as the match ended in a tie.

The Spartans finished the game with 26-13 advantage in shots. Senior forward Marley Praprost and freshman forward Kimberly Chen each led the squad with six shots apiece.

Junior goalkeeper Sarah Newcomb went the distance for the Spartans in net, making five saves.

Case Western Reserve will have a week break from conference play, returning to action next Saturday, October 22nd against Wooster College. The non-conference game is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start at Carl Dale Field in Wooster, Ohio.
