Spartans Fall Short in Season Finale to #5 Carnegie Mellon 1-0 in 2 OT

The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team battled a top-10 opponent into double overtime for the second-straight game, but a goal by fifth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University just over two minutes into the second extra period sent the Spartans to a 1-0 defeat in their season finale at DiSanto Field.

With the loss, the Spartans ended the season with an overall record of 7-7-4, including a 0-6-1 mark in the UAA.  Carnegie Mellon, which earned a share of the UAA Championship with the win, ended its regular season with a 15-1-1 record and a 6-1-0 conference record.

Carnegie Mellon registered the 'golden goal' at the 102:33 mark, scoring when Samantha Smith's free kick connected with teammate Haili Adams inside the box.  Adams was able to poke the ball through for the deciding goal, her fifth of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Megan Romelfanger made eight saves in the match for the Spartans.

Prior to the game on Saturday, CWRU honored its graduating players – Makenzie Best, Rachel Hammond, Rachel Junn, Megan Romelfanger, Meredith Shea and Lauren Wichman – with a special 'Senior Day' ceremony, to mark the six playing in their final home game as Spartans.

Saturday's game concludes the 2015 campaign for Case Western Reserve.
