Best’s Goal the Difference-Maker in 1-0 CWRU Win over Baldwin Wallace

Case Western Reserve University senior Makenzie Best broke a scoreless tie with a 61st minute goal to lead the Spartans to a 1-0 win at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio on Wednesday night.

The Spartans remained undefeated on the season with the win, improving to 3-0-2 overall in 2015.  Baldwin Wallace dropped to 3-2-2 with the loss.

CWRU picked up its fourth shutout through five games this season.  The Spartans have allowed just one goal, and carry a team goals-against average of 0.18 in 2015.

After a scoreless first half, Best put the Spartans on the board at the 60:18 mark with her team-leading second goal of the season, each of which has come in the last two games.  Junior Alexa Williams assisted on the goal, her first of the year.

Best and junior midfielder Amy Lindberg each had a team-high three shots, with Lindberg also pacing the squad with a pair of shots on goal.

Sophomore Sarah Newcomb earned the first win of her career in goal, contributing to the shutout with three second-half saves on Wednesday.

The Spartans outshot the Yellow Jackets 12-7 in the game, including a 7-5 edge in shots on goal.

CWRU will begin a three-game home stand on Friday night, when the team plays host to Ohio Northern University at 7:30 p.m. at DiSanto Field.
