CWRU Women’s Soccer Remains Unbeaten after 1-1 Tie at Wittenberg

The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team kept its unbeaten record intact on Saturday, playing to a 1-1 tie in double-overtime against the Wittenberg University Tigers in Springfield, Ohio.

The draw brings the Spartans' 2015 ledger to 2-0-2, while the Tigers now stand at 3-1-1 for the campaign.

The Spartans took the early lead in the match on senior Makenzie Best's first goal of the season.  Best struck in the 29th minute of action, putting CWRU in front 1-0.

The lead would hold through the rest of the half, but Wittenberg evened the score early in the second frame on a 56th-minute goal from Mackenzie Bolon, assisted by Julia Smith.

The Tigers' score ended a stretch of 346 minutes and 37 seconds without a goal allowed by the Spartans defense in 2015.

Both defenses would hold strong for the rest of regulation and both overtime periods, as the match ended in a tie.

The Spartans finished the game with a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal, despite being outshot overall 13-10.  Senior Rachel Hammond, freshman Emily Dickens and Best each led the squad with two shots apiece, while Dickens' two shots on goal were a team-high as well.

Senior goalkeeper Megan Romelfanger went the distance for the Spartans in net, making three saves.

Case Western Reserve will be back in action next week, playing at Baldwin-Wallace University on Wednesday, September 16th at 7:00 p.m.
