On Wednesday night in Horsburgh Gymnasium, the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team celebrated Senior Night by splitting two dual matches. First, the Spartans defeated Ohio Wesleyan University 27-26 in dramatic fashion. However, in the later match, CWRU fell to Otterbein University 38-15.
With the split, the Spartans' record in dual matches is 2-6. OWU dropped to 0-2 on the season, and Otterbein improved to 13-2.
In the first match, the Spartans used a pin from first-year Connor Forrest in the final bout to claim the victory over OWU. Heading into the 285-pound bout down 26-21, CWRU needed all six points to win. In his first-ever collegiate bout, Forrest pinned Nathan Scott in 2:26 to give the Spartans the dramatic dual victory.
Case Western Reserve started the match well, with sophomore Adam Kates winning 13-11 at 125 pounds to give the team a 3-0 lead. After two consecutive Battling Bishops' wins in the 133- and 141-bound bouts brought the dual score to 10-3, senior Andrew Hoover earned a pin over Max Beard in 2:27 to pull the Spartans back within one point for the match.
After CWRU fell in the following 157-pound bout, senior Isaac Collier earned a pin in 1:52 at 165 pounds to give the Spartans the lead, 15-14. It was Collier's third pin of the season. Though the Spartans lost in the next two bouts at 174 and 184 pounds, junior Brian Kent earned a win by forfeit to set up Forrest's heroics.
In the second match against the Cardinals, the Spartans started with a win from Kates by forfeit at 125 pounds to go up 6-0. After suffering two consecutive defeats at 133 and 141 pounds, Andrew Hoover responded to give CWRU a 12-9 lead with another pin at 149 pounds. The pin was his sixth of the season. Otterbein pulled away and clinched the dual win with four consecutive victories, leading 32-12 with two bouts remaining. However, in the 197-pound bout, Kent prevailed by an 8-1 decision to give the Spartans their third win of the dual.
Before the start of the second match, the Spartans recognized the four senior members of the squad: Collier, Jacob Frisch, Alec Hoover, and Andrew Hoover.
The Spartans next travel to Elmhurst, Illinois to compete in the Al Hanke Invite at Elmhurst College on Saturday, January 18th. Competition is set to begin at 10:00 a.m. ET.
