The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team wrapped up competition at the CWRU Mini Invitational at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday afternoon. Wrestlers competed as individuals with no team scoring at the event. Other colleges competing at the invite were Muskingum University, Defiance College, and Ohio Wesleyan University.
Nine Spartans pinned an opponent during the course of competition, with first-year Mitchell Arch, sophomore Grant Robinson, and first-year Brad Staron each recording two pins. Other Spartans to record pins were sophomores Brandon Callow, Jack Chipps, Manhattan Gatton, senior Andrew Hoover, first-year Liam Jeske, and junior Joey Shulik.
Arch, who finished 2-1 overall, pinned Defiance's Aubrey Nelson 38 seconds into the bout and Defiance's Isaac Oonk 33 seconds into the bout. Robinson, a 2-1 overall finisher, pinned Defiance's Seth Bowman in 28 seconds and Muskingum's Cody Jenkins in 1:43. Staron's pins came over Defiance's Logan Hawn in 4:43 and Ohio Wesleyan's Zach Smith in 1:10. Staron finished 2-0 on the day.
Chipps, who added a 19-0 technical fall win and finished 2-1 overall, pinned Zach Mason from Muskingum in 53 seconds. Finishing the day at 2-0 was Hoover, who pinned Defiance's Kobe Scott at 4:32. Gatton's pin was over Smith at 1:38, and Jeske's was over Jonathon Schafer from Muskingum.
Four additional Spartans finished the day at 2-0, including senior Isaac Collier who recorded two technical falls. Other wrestlers with two wins were sophomore Duncan Clayton, junior Brian Kent, and senior Jacob Frisch.
Case Western Reserve next travels to Berea, Ohio for the Baldwin Wallace Invitational with competition slated to start at 10:00 a.m.
