Three Spartan wrestlers won both of their matches, but the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team were swept in a tri-meet with Thiel College and Lourdes University on Wednesday evening in Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans (0-2) fell to Thiel (4-1) 24-14, and then lost to Lourdes (6-8), 30-20.
Versus Thiel, freshman Adam Kates put the Spartans on the board first with a 9-2 decision victory over Devyn Giovengo. Juniors Alec Hoover and Andrew Hoover then increased the CWRU lead to 11-0 after a 17-1 technical fall by Alec Hoover and a 5-2 decision win by Andrew Hoover.
The Tomcats took the next two matches, before junior Isaac Collier won a 3-2 decision over Austin Bonacci to give the Spartans a 14-8 lead. However, Thiel would close out the next four matches with wins to secure the 24-14 victory.
Versus Lourdes, Kates won by forfeit at 125 and then Alec Hoover earned a 9-1 major decision victory over Tyler Robert. CWRU dropped the next three matches, before Collier pinned Grant Pittroff in 1:08 to give the Spartans a 16-15 lead. After loss at 174 and 184, senior Gavin Dersh-Fisher earned CWRU's final points at 197 pounds after he picked up an 8-0 major decision victory.
The Spartans will return to action on Saturday, January 12th, as they travel to North Manchester, Indiana for the Spartan Mat Open, hosted by Manchester University. Action at the meet is scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m.
