CWRU Wrestling 2017-18 Season Recap

The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team saw major improvements during the 2017-18 season, as the squad finished with the most dual match victories since Head Coach Danny Song took over the program prior to the 2015-16 season.

With nine of the team's 16 wrestlers on the roster either freshman or sophomores, the team continued to gain experience throughout the season and began to see the results during competition. One of the team's major highlights came during the 2018 University Athletic Association Championships in Chicago, Illinois, as sophomore Andrew Hoover was named the All-UAA wrestler in the 141-pound weight class, becoming the third Spartan in the 141-pound weight class to earn the All-UAA honor, and first since Clay Criss in 2009. CWRU would finish third at the 2018 UAA Championships.

Andrew Hoover paced the Spartans during the year with 29 wins, followed by junior 197-pounder Gavin Dersh-Fisher who recorded 21 wins. Sophomore 133-pounder Alec Hoover was also a bright spot for the Spartans, as he also totaled 21 wins, including a team-high 10 pins and one technical fall.

Alec Hoover and Dersh-Fisher also placed in their respective weight classes at the NCAA Division III Central Region Championships. Alec Hoover finished fifth in the 133-pound weight class as he went 3-2 throughout the regional, while Dersh-Fisher placed sixth in the 197-pound weight class after posting a 3-3 record throughout the regional. Case Western Reserve finished 16th at the NCAA Regionals.

Earlier in the year, the Spartans swept a tri-meet with Thiel College and Lourdes University to pick up their first victories of the season. CWRU defeated Thiel, 33-14, and defeated Lourdes, 25-21. Five Spartan wrestlers won both of their matches, including pins from Alec Hoover, sophomore Andrew Munn and senior Nate Tommas.

CWRU's best overall team performance came at the Waynesburg Invitational, hosted by Waynesburg University. The Spartans totaled 85.0 points, finishing seventh at the completion. Munn, junior Brian McNamara and senior Nate Lewis paced the Spartans, notching a second-place and co-third-place finishes in their respective weight classes. They led a pack of eight CWRU wrestlers to win at least two matches on the day.

Other notable tournament finishes for Case Western Reserve during the year included a 9th-place finish at the RIT Invitational on December 2nd, a 27th-place finish at the Pete Willson Invitational on January 26th and 28th, and a 9th-place finish at the John Summa Tournament on February 3rd.

The Spartans capped of their 2017-18 campaign by having Lewis, Dersh-Fisher, Alec Hoover and Andrew Hoover named as National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Scholar All-Americans. The squad as a whole was also recognized with the NWCA Scholar Team Award with the nation's eighth-best grade point average.

In addition to their NWCA Scholar Awards, the Spartans excelled individually in the classroom during the campaign. Eight members of the team – senior Cito Balsells, sophomore Isaac Collier, Dersh-Fisher, sophomore Jacob Frisch, Alec Hoover, Andrew Hoover, Nate Tommas and senior Nick Tommas – received UAA All-Academic recognition based on their cumulative grade point averages.
