Case Western Reserve University senior Matt Moy was named the All-University Athletic Association wrestler in the 125-pound weight class, as the Spartans finished third at the 2017 UAA Championships, hosted by New York University in New York, New York on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans finished third in the team standings after falling 29-12 to the University of Chicago, and dropping a 36-9 match against 13th-ranked New York University. NYU would eventually win the UAA Championships, its sixth-straight, with a 35-3 win over Chicago.
The Spartans dropped to 2-7 on the season, while Chicago now stands at 6-4, and New York University ended the day with a 17-4 record.
Versus Chicago, the Spartans opened with a 9-0 lead due to a forfeit at 125 in favor of Moy and then a 3-0 decision victory by freshman Alec Hoover over Elliot Henderson at 133. Moy becomes the fourth Spartan in the 125-pound weight class to earn the All-UAA honor, and the first since Josh Hall in 2014. The Maroons took the 141-pound match before the Spartans got their final points thanks to a 6-2 decision victory by freshman Michael Petersen over Kahlan Lee-Lerner at 149.
Versus NYU, freshman Jacob Frisch put the Spartans on the board first with a win by forfeit at 125. The Violets would win the next eight matches to go up 36-6 before sophomore Brian McNamara won a 3-2 decision over Santino Pelusi in the 285-pound draw.
After a week off from the competition, the Spartans will return to action at the 2017 NCAA Division III Mideast Regionals, hosted by York College in York, Pennsylvania on Saturday February 25th and Sunday February 26th.
