The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team placed 10th at the sixth-annual Waynesburg Invitational on Saturday, January 7th in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Freshmen Alec Hoover and Isaac Collier paced the Spartans, notching a third-place and fifth-place finish in their respective weight classes, leading a pack of six CWRU wrestlers to win at least two matches on the day.
Competing in the 133-pound bracket, Alec Hoover picked up a win by major decision, 9-0, over Johns Hopkins Brandon Tran, and added an 11-4 decision over Johns Hopkins Christian Vallis in the consolation semifinals. His performance contributed 17.0 points towards the team total.
After falling in his second match of the day in the 149-pound draw, Collier bounced back with back-to-back-to-back victories, defeating Washington & Jefferson's Joshua Armstrong by pin (6:47), claiming a 7-5 decision over Heidelberg's Joey Baitt and adding a 10-5 decision over Dylan Dolph of Ohio Northern. His fifth-place finish provided CWRU with another 15.0 points.
Two Spartans won a pair of matches each in the 174-pound draw. Junior Nick Tommas added two victories, winning his first round match by decision, 9-8, over Johns Hopkins Anders Bright, and then later a consolation match over Eric Murdock of Heidelberg, 7-1. He contributed 9.0 points to the team total and placed sixth in the 174-pound bracket. Junior Nate Tommas added 7.0 points to the team total, after winning his first match by a 13-12 decision over Thomas More's Andrew Taylor, and then pinning Thiel's John Sims (6:00) in a consolation match.
In the 125-pound bracket, freshman Jacob Frisch earned a pin over Thiel's Matthew O'Connor (0:46) and then recorded another pin over Jared Prude of Thiel (6:20) in the second round of the consolation draw to score 7.0 team points.
CWRU wrestlers totaled 51.0 points on Saturday, finishing 10th at the competition. Heidelberg won the tournament with 148.0 points, followed by Ohio Northern in second place with 145.5 points and Waynesburg in third with 124.0.
The Spartans will return home on Wednesday, January 11th for their first dual match of the season. CWRU will host Otterbein University at 7:00 p.m. in Horsburgh Gymnasium.
