CWRU Wrestling Heads to Wheaton, Ill. for Pete Willson Invite

The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team will look to build on the momentum of its first win of the season last Saturday, when the squad travels to Wheaton, Illinois for the Pete Willson Invitational, hosted by Wheaton College on Friday, January 29th and Saturday, January 30th.

Action is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m. ET on Friday, and continue throughout the day, with action resuming on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.  Results from the tournament will be updated throughout the two days at  The Championship matches on Saturday, scheduled to start at approximately 12:30 p.m., will be webcasted at

The field for the Pete Willson Invitational is slated to be a strong one, including second-ranked UW-LaCrosse, third-ranked Messiah, seventh-ranked Alma, eighth-ranked Elmhurst and 14th-ranked UW Whitewater.  Other schools schedule to attend include Adrian, Augustana, Baldwin-Wallace, Buena Vista, University of Chicago, Concordia University (Wis.), Elizabethtown, Ferrum, Heidelberg, John Carroll, Lakeland, Manchester, Millikin, Mount St. Joseph, Mount Union, MSOE, Muskingum, North Central (Ill.), Ohio Northern, Olivet, Pacific, Trine, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Parkside, UW-Platteville, and UW-Stevens Point.

The Spartans will be looking to maintain momentum, following a 25-16 home win over Muskingum at the 2016 Si Ostrach Meet last Saturday.  Senior and UAA Wrestler of the Week Nick Lees (174 pounds) and freshman Garrett Ruderman (184 pounds) each earned wins by technical fall, while freshman Connor Howlin (141 pounds), Gavin Dersh-Fisher (197 pounds) and freshman Brian McNamara (285 pounds) each added victories during the team win.

Six wrestlers are currently scheduled to compete for the Spartans, including junior Matt Moy (125 pounds), freshman AJ Vetturini (157 pounds), sophomore Nick Tommas (165 pounds), Lees (174 pounds), Ruderman (184 pounds) and Dersh-Fisher (197 pounds).  An addition three Spartans – freshman Luke DiMuzio (125 pounds), sophomore Connor Gordon (157 pounds) and McNamara (285 pounds) – might also see action during the weekend.

Results of the meet will also be posted to after each day of competition, with a full recap after the conclusion of competition on Saturday.
