CWRU Wrestling to Return to Action with Two Matches this Week

The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team will return to action this week for the first time following its winter break, when the Spartans travel to Ashland, Ohio for a dual match against Ashland University on Wednesday, January 13th at 7:00 p.m., and to Collegeville, Pennsylvania for the Will Abele Open, hosted by Ursinus College, on Saturday, January 16th.

The Spartans, 0-4 on the year in dual matches, will be back in action for the first time since a portion of the squad took part in the Cleveland State Open on December 12th

Junior and 174-pound wrestler Nick Lees has led the Spartans this season with seven wins (7-6 overall), including a team-best five pins and one technical fall.  Sophomore Connor Gordon has added four wins (4-6 overall) with a pair of pins at the 157-pound weight class, while sophomore Nate Tommas (2-2 at 165 pounds) and freshman AJ Vetturini (2-2, one pin at 157 pounds) have also registered multiple wins on the season.

Ashland is 1-2 in dual matches during the 2015-16 campaign and is ranked 19th among NCAA Division II programs.  The Eagles feature a pair of wrestlers who are nationally ranked by InterMat Wrestling, including Chandler Minnard, who is seventh in the 133-pound weight class, and Joe Brandt, who is third in the 197-pound weight class.

Case Western Reserve is one of 11 teams currently scheduled to compete at Saturday's Will Abele Open at Ursinus, along with Amherst, Camden County, Mount Saint Vincent, Rhode Island, SUNY Sullivan, Maryland – Baltimore County, Ursinus, Valley Forge Military Academy, Washington & Jefferson and Wisconsin – Eau Claire.

Full results and a recap of each event will be posted to following the completion of competition each day.
