UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Freshman David Brunk (Hood River, Ore./Hood River Valley) scored a decision at 174 pounds as the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team opened the dual meet portion of the 2013-14 schedule with a 38-3 loss at local-rival John Carroll University on Tuesday evening at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.
Brunk jumped out to an early lead and held on late to defeat fellow collegiate rookie Steven Schmitz by a score of 8-5. The win bumped Brunk's record to 3-2 for the young season.
In addition to Brunk, freshman 141-pounder Jeff Gould (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) scored a late escape versus Anthony Trocchio, but the John Carroll freshman picked up the deciding point in a 2-1 decision thanks to riding time. At 149 pounds, freshman Luke Marcelli (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) hung tough in a 15-9 decision versus returning national qualifier Dan Mirman.
In the tightest match of the night, JCU freshman Isen Vajusi edged Spartan sophomore Eric Sullivan (Middletown, Ohio/Lakota East) in a back-and-forth, 14-13, affair.
The Spartans have a week and a half off from competition before returning to action at cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 23 in Berea.
