Case Western Reserve University struggled to get its offense firing on all cylinders on Sunday afternoon, as the Spartans suffered an 83-41 loss to the 24th-ranked University of Chicago Maroons at the Ratner Center in Chicago, Illinois.
The Spartans now stand at 10-12 overall, including a 5-6 mark in University Athletic Association games. Chicago remained in first place in the conference standings with an 8-3 league record, while improving to 17-5 overall.
Sophomore guard Alyssa Hyland and sophomore guard/ forward Abbey Lawrence each scored seven points to lead the Spartans. First-year guards McKenna Gross and Savannah Glimpse and graduate student forward Melissa Heath each added six points. Heath added a team-high eight points.
The Spartans' bench was one of the highlights for the team on Sunday, accounting for 25 of the team's 41 points.
Chicago opened the game on a 10-2 run, and never looked back. The Spartans trailed 18-6 by the end of the opening quarter, and were down 38-9 by the end of the first half. Chicago went on to lead by as many as 49 points late in the fourth quarter of the game.
The Spartans will return to Cleveland for their final two home games of the 2019-20 season next weekend. The Spartans will host the University of Rochester on Friday night at 6:00 p.m., and then welcome Emory University to Horsburgh Gymnasium on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. for 'Senior Day.'
