Spartan Women Drop 64-55 Contest to NYU on Throwback Sunday

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team fell to New York University 64-55 on Sunday afternoon at historic Adelbert Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio to conclude Throwback Weekend. The Spartans fell to 10-10 overall and 5-4 in the University Athletic Association. The Violets improve to 16-4 and 6-3 in the UAA. Despite the loss, the Spartans remain just one game behind the UAA leaders—NYU, Emory, and Chicago—with five games left in the conference slate.

Graduate student forward Melissa Heath led the Spartans with 15 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Kendall McConico added 10 points and five rebounds, while first-year guard McKenna Gross tied a career-high with five assists off the bench.

In a back-and-forth start to the game, neither team led by more than two points until senior guard Alicia Marie Gonzales made a three-pointer to break a tie with 3:16 left in the first quarter. The Violets quickly used an 8-1 run to reclaim a four-point advantage, 16-12. In response, the Spartans scored the next four points to tie the game at 16 to end the first quarter. Six CWRU players scored in the opening period, led by sophomore guard/forward Abbey Lawrence with six.

The teams opened the second quarter with a three-pointer each to keep the score tied. Free throws from sophomore guard Alyssa Hyland capped a 9-0 Spartan run early in the second quarter to give the Spartans a six-point advantage, 25-19, their largest of the afternoon. NYU responded with a 7-0 run to take a one-point lead with less than four minutes remaining in the first half. A three-pointer from first-year guard/forward Isabella Mills put Case Western Reserve back on top, and Heath added a layup to increase the lead to four. The half ended with the Spartans up 30-26.

All eight Spartans who appeared in the game scored in the first half, with Heath leading the team with seven points.

The Violets took a four-point lead with a 10-2 run to start the second half. Heath tied the game at 36 with a layup, but NYU responded with a layup to reclaim the lead. The Violets went up four, 41-37, with four minutes to go in the third quarter. Heath tied the game at 41 with a jumper, and McConico put the Spartans ahead with a free throw. An NYU jumper gave the Violets a one-point lead, but a McConico three-pointer gave CWRU a 45-44 advantage heading into the fourth.

In a tightly contested game, a 13-2 NYU run to start the fourth quarter was too much for the Spartans to overcome. The Violets took a 10-point lead, 57-47, with 5:11 left. Despite Case Western Reserve cutting the deficit to three with a three-pointer from Lawrence and under three minutes to play, NYU ended the game on a 7-1 run to clinch the victory.

During Sunday's game, the Spartans celebrated Throwback Weekend honoring the history of the University by wearing the jerseys of Mather College, one of the schools that later would become CWRU.

Case Western Reserve hits the road for two UAA games next weekend, first traveling to St. Louis to take on Washington University on Friday at 7 p.m., then heading to Chicago to face the 13th-ranked University of Chicago on Sunday at 3 p.m. Visit for a full preview of the matchups later in the week.
