Spartan Women Fall to Brandeis to Open Throwback Weekend

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team dropped an 80-71 contest to Brandeis University on Friday night at historic Adelbert Gymnasium as part of Throwback Weekend. The Spartans fall to 10-9 overall and 5-3 in the University Athletic Association. The Judges improve to 13-6 and 3-5 in the UAA. The loss was Case Western Reserve's first at home this season and broke an eight-game home winning streak dating back to last season.

Five Spartans scored in double figures, with sophomore guard/forward Abbey Lawrence leading the team with 16 points. Lawrence added a team-high five assists and grabbed six rebounds. Both first-year guard/forward Isabella Mills and senior guard Kendall McConico fell one rebound short of a double-double, with Mills scoring 13 points and collecting nine rebounds and McConico scoring 10 points with nine boards. Mills added two blocked shots on the defensive end. Graduate student Melissa Heath scored 10 points and collected six rebounds, while first-year guard McKenna Gross added 15 points.

After CWRU trailed by just six at halftime, Brandeis opened the second half with an 11-0 run to pull ahead by 17. Late in the fourth quarter, the Spartans cut the deficit to seven, trailing 68-61 with 2:14 to play. However, the team could not close the gap in the final minutes and fell to the Judges by nine.

A layup from Heath with 3:14 left in the first half cut the Spartan deficit to just one, 26-25, the closest the team would get after starting the game with the lead. The Judges responded with six straight points to open a seven-point advantage and led 36-30 at the halftime break.

Heath opened the scoring for the Spartans two minutes into the contest, igniting a 7-2 CWRU run to start the game. Brandeis responded with a 13-3 run to take a 15-10 lead with more than two minutes left in the first quarter. The Spartans trailed by as many as eight in the first quarter, and after the first 10 minutes, the team trailed 21-15. Case Western Reserve cut the deficit to two early in the second quarter, but Brandeis maintained an advantage for the duration of the first half and led 36-30 at halftime.

With CWRU down by 17 in the third quarter, Gross drained a three-pointer to start an 8-2 Spartan run to cut the deficit to 11. Case Western Reserve could not cut the deficit any further, however, and at the end of the third quarter, CWRU trailed 60-47.

Despite the loss, the Spartans remain just one game back in the UAA, trailing both Chicago and Emory in the conference standings.

Friday's game was played at historic Adelbert Gymnasium as a part of Throwback Weekend at CWRU, as the Spartans honored the history of the University by donning the traditional yellow uniforms of Mather College, one of the schools that would eventually become Case Western Reserve University.

The Spartans wrap up Throwback Weekend on Sunday, February 9, when the team welcomes NYU to Adelbert Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
