CWRU Drops Opener at Springhill Suites Tipoff Tournament to W&J, 71-64

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team suffered a 71-64 setback in its opening game at the Springhill Suites Tipoff Tournament against host Washington & Jefferson College on Friday night in Washington, Pennsylvania.

The loss was the third straight to open the season for the Spartans, while the Presidents improved to 2-0 with the win.

Sophomore guard/forward Abbey Lawrence led the team in scoring for the third-straight game, matching her career-high with 21 points.  It was her second 20-point effort of the season, coming on a seven-of-16 shooting effort, including two-for-four from behind the three-point line.  Lawrence added a team-best six rebounds, three assists and two steals in the contest as well.

Senior guard Kendall McConico also scored in double-figures on Friday, recording a season-high 13 points on a four-of-seven shooting performance.

The Spartans never trailed in the opening quarter and led by as many as eight points, taking a 16-8 advantage on a layup by Lawrence after a steal by first-year guard/forward Isabella Mills with 3:16 to play in the period, and an 18-10 lead with 2:44 left on another layup by Lawrence.  However, the Presidents closed the gap to a point, 18-17, by the end of the quarter, and then grabbed their first lead of the game, 19-18, with 8:33 to go.  CWRU responded, regaining the lead behind five-straight points from Lawrence and a jumper by senior guard Alicia Marie Gonzales to go ahead 25-19 with 6:03 left in the half, and the Spartans took a 37-29 lead into the locker room at halftime following a successful and-one by McConico at the end of the period.

CWRU led until the halfway point of the third quarter, when the Presidents knotted the score at 41-41, and Washington & Jefferson took its first lead of the half with 3:37 to go in the period, before closing out the third with a four-point lead, 52-48.  A pair of free throws by McConico with 6:28 remaining in the game helped get the Spartans back within two points, 56-54, but that would be as close as the Spartans would get for the rest of the game, as the Presidents were able to pull away for the victory.

Case Western Reserve will conclude play at the Springhill Suites Tipoff Tournament on Saturday against Otterbein College at 1:00 p.m.
