The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team suffered a loss in its opening game of the 2019-20 campaign, falling to Albion College 76-51 in Albion, Michigan.
Making the first start of her collegiate career, sophomore guard/forward Abbey Lawrence led the Spartans with 21 points and six rebounds in the game. Lawrence shot nine-of-17 overall from the floor, including one-for-five from three-point range.
First-year guard Isabella Mills was also in the starting lineup for the Spartans, and scored seven points while collecting six steals, four rebounds and three assists in her collegiate debut.
CWRU held a one-point lead, 10-9, after a jumper by Mills with 2:15 to play in the opening quarter, but Albion closed out the frame on a 5-2 run to take a 14-12 lead into the second quarter. The Britons would never trail again in the game, taking a 36-22 lead into halftime, and growing their advantage to 56-37 by the end of the third.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 33.9% overall, but struggled to find their range from distance, connecting on just three-of-22 three-point attempts.
Albion's Evelyn Wischmeyer led all scorers on Saturday with 23 points, and Elena Welker added 16 for the Britons.
The Spartans will look to bounce back on Tuesday, November 12th when they travel to Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio for a 7:00 p.m. game against the Ladies.
