    Case Western Reserve University announced on Wednesday afternoon that its fall varsity sports (football, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s tennis) will not be participating in intercollegiate competition this season.

  • Women’s basketball seniors leave legacy of hard work, welcoming atmosphere, set up future success

    For the Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball team, the 2019-20 season was set up to build on their 15-win 2018-19 season. After a few early-season losses, the team was exceeding expectations in the middle of the season. At home in the middle of January, the Spartans swept Washington University and the University of Chicago, a team that made it to the second round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament at the end of the season. With the two wins, CWRU sat in first place in the University Athletic Association with a 3-0 record in league play and an 8-6 record overall.

For the remainder of the spring and into the summer, the official website of Spartan Athletics will be providing ‘Spartan Stories,’ a series daily features on teams, athletes and alumni to allow fans to keep up with their favorite teams.

    Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard/ forward Abbey Lawrence and graduate student forward Melissa Heath each received All-University Athletic Association honors for their play during the 2019-20 season, as announced by the conference on Thursday. Lawrence was selected to the All-UAA First Team, while Heath was chosen as an honorable mention.

    Despite a combined 34 points from first-year players McKenna Gross and Isabella Mills, and a 16-point effort by senior guard Kendall McConico in the final game of her collegiate career, the Spartans fell just short in double overtime on Saturday, suffering a 71-70 defeat to Carnegie Mellon University in the team’s season-finale in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

    Despite a combined 52 points from graduate student forward Melissa Heath and sophomore guard/forward Abbey Lawrence, the Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball team lost to Emory University 88-84 on Sunday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio on “Senior Day.” The Spartans fall to 10-14 on the season and 5-8 in the University Athletic Association, while the Eagles improve to 18-6 overall and 9-4 in the UAA.

The Spartans drop to 10-13 on the season and 5-7 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester improves to 11-12 and 5-7 in the UAA.

    The Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball team will play its final home games of the 2019-20 season this weekend, hosting the University of Rochester at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 21 and Emory University at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 23 at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition, Sunday will mark ‘Senior Day’ for the Spartans, as the team will be recognizing its three graduating players prior to the opening tip-off.

    The Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball team will hit the road this weekend, traveling to Washington University (Mo.) and the 24th-ranked University of Chicago this weekend. The Spartans will face the Bears at 7:00 p.m. ET on Friday, February 14 in St. Louis, Missouri, before traveling to Chicago for a 3:00 p.m. ET contest against the Maroons on Sunday, February 16.

    The Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball team fell to New York University 64-55 on Sunday afternoon at historic Adelbert Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio to conclude Throwback Weekend. The Spartans fell to 10-10 overall and 5-4 in the University Athletic Association. The Violets improve to 16-4 and 6-3 in the UAA. Despite the loss, the Spartans remain just one game behind the UAA leaders—NYU, Emory, and Chicago—with five games left in the conference slate.

    The Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball team dropped an 80-71 contest to Brandeis University on Friday night at historic Adelbert Gymnasium as part of Throwback Weekend. The Spartans fall to 10-9 overall and 5-3 in the University Athletic Association. The Judges improve to 13-6 and 3-5 in the UAA. The loss was Case Western Reserve’s first at home this season and broke an eight-game home winning streak dating back to last season.

    The Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball team will be back in Cleveland this weekend, as the team begins the second half of its conference schedule by hosting Brandeis University and New York University at historic Adelbert Gymnasium for CWRU’s annual Throwback Weekend. The Spartans will tip off against the Judges on Friday, February 7 at 6:00 p.m., and will take on the Violets on Sunday, February 9 at 8:00 p.m.

    Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard/ forward Abbey Lawrence became just the second player in program history to be named the Division III Women’s Basketball National Player of the Week by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA), earning the honor after averaging 29.0 points over a pair of Spartan wins at Brandeis University and New York University last weekend.
