Case Western Reserve University senior guard/ forward Hillary Hellmann was selected as the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week, after registering double-doubles in back-to-back games to lead the Spartans to a pair of wins at the 2018 HoopMIA D3 Holiday Shootout in Miami Shores, Florida on December 19th and 20th.
Hellmann averaged 21.5 points and 12.5 rebounds over the two games, shooting 40.0% (16-for-40) from the floor, 16.7% (three-of-18) from behind the three-point line, and 88.9% (eight-of-nine) from the free throw line, while adding three assists, three blocks and a steal. She led the Spartans to a 71-59 win over Thiel College on Wednesday, January 19th, scoring 13 points and collecting 12 rebounds, while adding two assists, two blocks and a steal. She shot 26.7% (four-of-15) in the game overall, including a two-of-nine (22.2%) mark from three-point range, and added converted three-of-four free throw tries over her 31 minutes of action. Hellmann followed that with a season-high 30-point performance during a 102-99 overtime win over Eastern the following day. She added 13 rebounds, an assist and a block over her 39 minutes on the court, while shooting 12-of-25 overall (48.0%), one-of-nine (11.1%) from three-point range, and five-for-five from the free throw line.
The two double-doubles give her four for the season and 15 for her career, and she leads the UAA with 17.6 points per game, while ranking fourth in the conference with 8.0 rebounds per contest.
Hellmann becomes the first Spartan this season to be named the UAA Athlete of the Week for Women's Basketball, and the first overall since the 2016-17 season. It was the fourth time over her career she has claimed the honor. This week's UAA Athlete of the Week award was based on all games from December 17th through January 1st.
Hellmann and the Spartans have won three-straight games to improve to 7-3 on the season with the two victories. Case Western Reserve will open conference play on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for a 2:00 p.m. game at Carnegie Mellon University.
