Women’s Basketball Defeated by #11 Chicago

The Case Western Reserve University suffered a 73-35 loss to the 11th-ranked University of Chicago, in University Athletic Association play in Chicago, Illinois on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Emily Todd led all Spartan scorers with nine points in the game, junior forward Hillary Hellmann collected eight points and six rebounds, and freshman forward Emma Cain scored four points and led all CWRU players with nine rebounds in the contest.

The Spartans kept the game close in the first quarter, with a three-pointer from Hellmann pulling CWRU back within three points, 10-7, with 3:08 to play in the period.  However, the Maroons would go on a 28-0 run that stretched over an 11-minute period between the first and second quarters, and would carry a 43-9 lead into halftime.  The Maroons would go on to extend their advantage to 61-19 by the end of the third quarter.  The Spartans outscored Chicago 16-12 in the final quarter, including a 13-2 run to close the game that featured threes from Todd and junior forward Darby Kreienberg, but it would prove to be too little too late for Case Western Reserve.

The Spartans dropped to 4-19 on the year with the loss, including a 1-12 conference record.  Chicago remained perfect in UAA play with a 13-0 league mark, and improved to 22-2 overall with Sunday's win, its 20th-consecutive victory.

Chicago's Marissa Igunbor came off the bench to lead all players in the game with 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Olariche Obi added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Case Western Reserve will conclude its 2017-18 season next Saturday, February 24th at 2:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania against Carnegie Mellon University.
