The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team closed out the fall semester with a 77-51 setback at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio on Monday night.
With the loss, the Spartans will head into the winter break with an overall record of 3-5. The Yellow Jackets claimed their second-straight victory, improving to 5-3 on the season.
The Spartans fell behind early on Monday night, after a 15-1 run in the first quarter gave the Yellow Jackets a 21-5 lead with 4:21 to play in the period, en route to a 28-12 lead by the end of the quarter. Baldwin Wallace's lead grew to as many as 17 in the first half, taking a 34-17 lead with 6:30 to play in the half on a three by Hannah Fecht. However, the CWRU defense held the Yellow Jackets without a field goal for the remainder of the period, and junior guard/forward Hillary Hellmann scored five of her team-leading seven first half points in the final two minutes of the second quarter, helping the Spartans pull back within 11, 37-26, by halftime.
Back-to-back layups by Hellmann and sophomore guard Alicia Marie Gonzales cut the Yellow Jackets' lead back to single digits, 41-32, with 7:23 to play in the third, but Baldwin Wallace pulled away with a 17-0 run, and closed the third with a 62-36 lead. The Yellow Jackets would lead by as many as 28 in the fourth quarter, en route to the 24-point victory.
Hellmann led the Spartans with 13 points and six rebounds in Monday's game, with freshman forward Emma Cain adding seven points, and freshman forward Madie Grossman coming off the bench to score four points with four rebounds and two blocks. Katie Smith had a team-leading 13 points for Baldwin Wallace.
Case Western Reserve will be off for the next 18 days for finals and the holidays, before return to action at the Smokey Ballenger Classic in Westerville, Ohio. The Spartans will open play at the tournament against host Otterbein University on Saturday, December 29th at 5:00 p.m.
