The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team fell to the 15th-ranked Ohio Northern University Polar Bears 88-49 in Ada, Ohio on Wednesday night.
The loss dropped the Spartans to 2-3 on the season. Ohio Northern improved to 4-1 with the win, the team's fourth-straight victory.
Spartans' junior guard/forward Hillary Hellmann scored 15 of her team-leading 16 points in the third quarter of the game, and added six rebounds. Sophomore guard Kendall McConico added eight points and eight rebounds in the game for CWRU.
Both team struggled to find their shot in the first quarter, but Ohio Northern would ultimately surge to a 12-5 lead by the end of the first period. Three pointers by sophomore guard Alicia Marie Gonzales and freshman guard Emily Todd helped CWRU keep the game within single digits in the second quarter, but the Polar Bears would again finish the period strong, and take a 14-point lead into halftime, 29-15. Gonzales led the Spartans with five first half points, while junior guard/forward Hellmann and McConico HHeach had a team-best five rebounds in the first half.
The Spartans would not allow the Polar Bears to pull away in the third quarter, largely behind Hellmann's 15-point effort in the frame. After Ohio Northern took a 20 point lead with 4:26 left in the period, the Spartans would trim the lead back to 14 with 44 seconds remaining in the third after a three from Hellmann made the score 50-36. However, a 22-2 run by the Polar Bears halfway through the fourth quarter put the game away for Ohio Northern.
Courtney Cramer shot eight-of-10 from the floor, including three-of-three from long range, to lead the Polar Bears with 21 points. Amy Bullimore finished the game with 15 points and eight rebounds for Ohio Northern.
Wednesday's game marked the end to a four game road stretch for the Spartans. Case Western Reserve will return home to Horsburgh Gymnasium to host the College of Wooster on Saturday, December 2nd at 1:00 p.m.
