The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team dropped a 79-70 contest at the University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon in the Spartans' final road game of the 2016-17 season.
The loss put the Spartans' overall record at 13-11 with a 5-8 mark in University Athletic Association play, while the Yellowjackets improved to 17-7 overall, including an 8-5 UAA record with a game left on both teams' schedules.
Junior forward Kara Hageman recorded her third double-double of the season and the 10th of her career in the loss, finishing the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead all CWRU players in both categories on Sunday. Hageman added two blocks, two steals and three assists in the game.
Senior guard Jess McCoy ended the game with 19 points on a seven-of-14 shooting effort, collecting six rebounds and three steals, and sophomore guard/forward Hillary Hellmann scored 15 points and registered nine rebounds on Sunday.
After McCoy scored the first three points of the game, Rochester went on an 8-0 run to take the lead. Hageman would close the first quarter with a layup that cut the lead to 16-12 by the end of the first period, and started a 10-0 CWRU run that gave the Spartans a 20-16 advantage with 8:24 to play in the half. CWRU led as late as 4:25 remaining in the half, but a 10-0 Rochester run to close out the period gave the Yellowjackets a 41-30 edge headed into the break.
Rochester went on to score the first six points of the second half, before back-to-back threes by McCoy and Hageman ended the Yellowjackets' 16-0 run, and cut the Rochester lead to 47-36 with 6:32 left in the third period. After a Rochester free throw, the Spartans went on a 12-0 run to even the score at 48-48, following a three by Hageman with 2:33 left. Rochester scored five of the final six points in the quarter to carry a 53-49 lead into the final period.
A free throw by freshman guard Kendall McConico, followed by a layup by McCoy, brought the Spartans back within a point just over a minute into the fourth quarter, but the team would be unable to pull even for the remainder of the contest. A layup by Hageman closed the gap back to 70-66 with 2:03 left to play, before an and-one converted by Rochester's Alexandra Leslie on the following possession put the game out of reach for the Spartans.
Case Western Reserve outshot Rochester 37.7% to 35.7% overall, including a 32.1% to 29.6% edge from behind the three point line. However, the Yellowjackets finished the game with a 54-37 edge in rebounds and a 14-1 advantage in second chance points, proving to be the difference in the game.
Rochester's Leslie led all players on Sunday with 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Lauren Deming scored 15 and Lizzy Atkinson 14 for the Yellowjackets.
Case Western Reserve will conclude its 2016-17 season next weekend at home, when the Spartans host Carnegie Mellon University at Horsburgh Gymnasium at 2:00 p.m on Saturday, February 25th. Prior to the start of the game, the Spartans will honor their two graduating senior players – Jess McCoy and Alex Roth – with a special 'Senior Day' pregame ceremony.
