CWRU Women’s Basketball to Play at Kenyon before Break

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team will head to Gambier, Ohio on Friday, December 9th to face Kenyon College, in the Spartans' final game before their break for finals and the holiday season.  Tip-off on Friday is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

CWRU Spartans
Case Western Reserve will enter Friday's game on a four-game winning streak, and with an overall record of 6-2, including a perfect 4-0 record in games away from home.  The Spartans are coming off their biggest win of the season, topping the College of Wooster 97-72 on the road on Saturday.  For the season, the team is averaging 79.9 points per game, while shooting 44.7% from the field and 32.4% from three-point range.  The Spartans have allowed 76.4 points per game and collected 36.2 rebounds per contest, while recording margins of +2.5 turnovers and -5.2  rebounds.

The team's leading scorer this season has been sophomore forward Hillary Hellmann, who has averaged 21.8 points and 4.1 rebounds, while shooting a team-high 44.2% from beyond the arc.  Junior forward Kara Hageman has scored 21.0 points per game with 7.0 rebounds on a team-leading 52.3% from the field, and is leading all University Athletic Association players with 2.4 blocks per game.  Senior guard Jess McCoy has scored 14.5 points and has paced the squad with 7.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.3 steals.  Freshman guard Alicia Marie Gonzales has started all eight games, averaging 2.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists, while other Spartans to appear in each of the team's games this season include freshman guard Kendall McConico (7.6 ppg, 3.3 rpg), sophomore guard Alexis Amburgey (3.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg), senior guard Alex Roth (3.0 ppg), and sophomore guard Kasey Yu (2.9 ppg).

Case Western Reserve is under the leadership of Head Coach Jennifer Reimer, who is in her 10th season with the Spartans.  She holds an overall record of 270-219 (.552 winning percentage) during her 20-year career, and her 113 wins at CWRU are just seven shy of the program's all-time record.  She is assisted by Alexandra Dellas and Erin Gdaniec.

Kenyon Ladies
Kenyon has opened its season with a 5-2 overall record, including a 2-0 mark at home.  The Ladies are coming off a 42-35 loss at Denison last Saturday, and will host Allegheny College on Wednesday, prior to their game against the Spartans on Friday.  Kenyon has outscored its opponents by an average of 19.6 points per game this season, 65.9 to 46.3, while shooting 38.9% from the field and 30.0% from three point range.  The team has averaged 41.6 rebounds per game, and has outrebounded its opposition by an average of 4.3 per contest, with a  +1.2 turnover margin per game.

Leading the way for Kenyon this season has been senior forward Bailey Dominguez, who has averaged 11.7 points per game, while shooting 33.3% (18-of-54) from three-point range.  Freshman guard Paige Matijasich has come off the bench to score 8.3 points per game with 4.7 rebounds per contest, and junior forward Griffin Tullis leads the team with 6.3 rebounds, 11 steals and has added 7.1 points per game.

Kenyon is coached by Suzanne Helfant, who is now in her 22nd season at the team's helm.  She has a career record of 341-219 with the Ladies, and an overall mark of 375-262 during her 25-year career, which includes a three-year stint at Marietta College.  Helfant is assisted by Morgan Korinek and Laurel Gourrier.

Series History
Friday's game will be the 50th meeting all-time between the two teams.  Kenyon holds a 27-22 edge in the series, which dates back to the1978-79 campaign.

Last year, Case Western Reserve picked up a 62-51 win over Kenyon at Horsburgh Gymnasium.  In the game, Hillary Hellmann notched a double-double and led all players with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Kara Hageman added nine points, six rebounds and eight assists.  As a team, the Spartans shot 52.9% from three-point range in the game, hitting nine-of-17 shots from long range.

Case Western Reserve is one of just two NCAA teams in any of the three divisions (along with Lehman) with two players currently averaging 20 or more points per game this season (Hageman and Hellmann)… The Spartans' current four-game winning streak is their longest since the team won five straight games between December 8, 2012 and January 2, 2013… This is the first time the Spartans have won six of their first eight games since the 2012-13 campaign, and the sixth time overall in program history… Case Western Reserve has recorded 10 or more steals in five games this season, going 5-0 in such contests… CWRU is 2-0 this season when shooting at least 45.0% from three-point range, and has won five-straight games and seven of its last eight contests when shooting above the 45.0% mark from long range, dating back to the 2014-15 season… Jess McCoy ranks 19th in program history with 865 career points, and is 22 shy of matching former Spartan Laura Mummey for 18th place… McCoy also ranks ninth in school history in field goal percentage (.450), 10th in three pointers made (109), 12th in assists (182), seventh in blocks (75) and is the program's all-time leader with a career 84.9% free throw mark… Hillary Hellmann has made 23 three-pointers this season, the ninth-most among all NCAA Division III players… She is on pace for 71 three-pointers made this season, which would surpass the school record of 61 set by Jasmine Rowan during the 2002-03 season… Her 69 career three-pointers are the 13th-most ever by a Spartan, and are just three behind Standish Stewart (1992-94) for 12th in school history… Hellmann also ranks 58th in Division III and leads all UAA players this season in three-point field goal percentage (44.2%)… She is second among all NCAA Division III players in field goals made (66), total points (174) and field goal attempts (136) and is 22nd in points per game (21.8)… Kara Hageman leads the UAA and is 40th in Division III with 2.38 blocked shots per game, is fourth in total points (168), second in free throws made (48) and 29th in points per game (21.0)… Her 63 career blocked shots are the eighth-most in program history and 12 behind McCoy for seventh… The CWRU schedule currently ranks as the toughest in Division III, with its slated opponents registering a combined record of 77-23 thus far for a .770 winning percentage.
