CWRU Opens Throwback Weekend with 64-53 Loss to Brandeis

Case Western Reserve University freshman Hillary Hellmann notched her team-best fifth double-double of the season on Friday night in a 64-53 Spartans loss to Brandeis University to kick off Throwback Weekend at Adelbert Gymnasium.

Hellmann finished the game with 17 points, converting three-of-six shots from long range, and collected 10 rebounds, pacing all players in each category.  Senior Jessica McCoy fell just a rebound short of a double-double of her own, finishing the game with 12 points and nine rebounds, while senior Laura Mummey added 12 points as well.

The Spartans rallied late in the first half to take a one-point lead after the first 20 minutes of play on Friday night.  After trailing 14-11 after the first period and going down by as many as five, 24-19 with 4:00 left in the half, CWRU scored the final six points of the second to go into the break ahead 25-24.  Hellmann scored 12 points during the first half to lead all Spartan scorers.

The Spartans took their largest lead of the game at the 7:54 mark of the third, when a layup by Mummey put the Spartans ahead by three, 29-26.  However, a 12-0 run by the Judges over the next 2:22 put Brandeis back in front, giving the Judges a 38-29 lead.  Brandeis would lead by as many as 11 in the third, before a Hellmann three-pointer cut the lead back down to eight, 42-34, with 1:40 left.  A free throw with 1:06 remaining pulled the Spartans within seven, but a buzzer-beating basket by Kyla Gabriel gave the Judges a 44-35 edge heading into the final quarter.

The Spartans trailed by 10, 52-42 with 5:06 remaining in the game, before a 7-0 run, capped by a layup and one by McCoy, brought CWRU back within a possession, 52-49, with 3:07 remaining.   However, a 12-4 run to close the game by Brandeis secured the win for the Judges.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 6-13 on the season with a 1-7 mark in the UAA, while Brandeis improved to 10-9 with a 3-5 conference ledger.

Case Western Reserve will continue Throwback Weekend on Sunday, February 7th, when the Spartans host seventh-ranked UAA opponent New York University at historic Adelbert Gymnasium at 2:00 p.m.
