CWRU Women’s Basketball Defeats Emory 76-62 for First UAA Win

Sophomore forward Kara Hageman, senior guard Jessica McCoy and junior guard Hillary Hellmann each registered double-doubles on Sunday afternoon to pace the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team to its first University Athletic Association win of the season, 76-62 win over Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Case Western Reserve improved to 6-10 overall, with a 1-4 mark in UAA games.  Emory fell to 10-6, with a 1-4 conference mark.

Hellmann scored 12 of her 18 points during the fourth quarter, and collected 11 rebounds in the game for her fourth double-double of the campaign.  Hageman added 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the campaign, and McCoy scored 16 with 10 rebounds during the game for her second double-double of the year.  Senior forward Laura Mummey led all scorers on Sunday with 19 points.

The Spartans led 5-4 after a pair of free throws by McCoy with 5:57 left on the clock in the first period, but a 10-2 Emory run gave the Eagles a seven-point lead, 14-7, with 2:10 left.  CWRU closed the gap to three to end the quarter, after Mummey scored four-straight points, knocking down a three-pointer and later converting a free throw, to cut the Emory advantage to 14-11.

CWRU would knot the game at 17-17 at the 6:27 mark in the second period following a pair of free throws by senior guard Emily Young, and again at 19-19 on a layup by Mummey with 5:17 to play, but Emory finished the half on a 13-6 run to take a seven-point lead, 32-25, into halftime.

Emory quickly expanded its lead to 13 points early in the second half, starting the third period with back-to-back threes to go up 38-25 with 9:29 left.  CWRU wasted little time answering back, responding with a 14-0 run and taking a one-point lead, 39-38, on a pair of free throws by Hageman at the 5:23 mark in the third.  After the Eagles evened the game on a free throw, a layup by Hellmann with 4:12 on the clock gave the Spartans the lead back, as the team would build a four-point advantage 49-45, heading into the final quarter.

CWRU pushed its lead to six points with 8:31 left in the game, 53-47, following back-to-back layups by Hellmann, but the Eagles would battle back to tie the score at 55-55 with 5:31 to play.  A layup by Mummey and a three from McCoy gave the Spartans a five-point lead, 60-55, with 3:47 left.  After Emory's Khadijah Sayyid hit a jumper to pull back within a possession, Hellmann helped lock the game up for the Spartans with six unanswered points on a three-pointer and three free throws to give CWRU a nine point advantage.  CWRU hit 13-straight free throws in the closing minutes to secure the 14-point win.

The Spartans shot 46.9% from the field in the second half, including 45.5% from beyond the arc.  The team converted 16-of-17 free throw attempts in the second half, and shot 85.2% from the line for the game.  CWRU finished with a 49-39 edge in rebounds over the Eagles.

The Spartans will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Brandeis University for a 6:00 p.m. matchup against the Judges on Friday, January 29th
