Mummey’s Double-Double Not Enough in Spartans’ 66-55 Loss at #7 Rochester

Case Western Reserve University senior forward Laura Mummey recorded her second double-double of the season with 20 points and 13 rebounds, but despite the strong effort, the Spartans fell short against the seventh-ranked University of Rochester, 66-55 in Rochester, New York on Friday night.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 0-4 in University Athletic Association play, and to 5-10 overall.  The Yellowjackets remained in first in the conference with a 4-0 UAA ledger, and improved to 14-1 with the win.

Mummey matched her career high in rebounds and set a new season-high in points.  Sophomore forward Kara Hageman added 13 points and seven rebounds, while freshman guard Hillary Hellmann scored 10 and collected six boards.  Junior guard Jessica McCoy finished her well-rounded game with nine points and seven rebounds, while leading all players with four steals and three blocks.

After falling behind by five points halfway through the first quarter, the Spartans went on a 6-0 run, taking their first lead of the game on a layup by Hageman with 1:21 remaining.  Rochester would notch the final basket of the period, taking a 13-12 lead after the first 10 minutes.  The Spartans kept the game close through most of the second quarter, but a 7-0 run by Rochester to close out the frame game the Yellowjackets their largest lead of the game, 33-21, heading into the break.

Hellmann finished the first half with eight points and four rebounds, while Hageman scored six.  Mummey and junior guard Alex Roth each tallied six first half rebounds.

Rochester took a 14 point lead, 39-25, with 7:03 remaining in the third, but the Spartans launched a 9-0 run, keyed by three-straight baskets from Mummey, to pull back within five points, 39-34, with 4:49 to play in the quarter.  CWRU kept within reach, trailing by just six at the end of the period, 43-37.

However, the Yellowjackets opened the final period on an 8-0 run, en route to taking a game-high 15-point lead, 56-41, with 4:15 to play.   CWRU would be unable to bring the lead any closer than 11 points for the remainder of the game, as Rochester secured its ninth-straight victory.

Alexandra Leslie recorded a double-double of her own with 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Lauren Deming added 15 points in the win for the Yellowjackets.

The Spartans will head to Atlanta, Georgia to face Emory University at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 24th.
