CWRU Women’s Basketball Falls at Home to #11 Wash U, 64-55

Case Western Reserve University sophomore Kara Hageman scored 16 points, and junior Jessica McCoy finished the game with 15 points and seven rebounds, but it was not enough for the Spartans, who fell 64-55 to the 11th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) Bears at Horsburgh Gymnasium on Friday night.

Hageman added five rebounds and a pair of assists, while McCoy shot five-for-eight from the field, including two-for-three from long range, and finished the contest with five blocks, three assists and two steals.  Freshman Hillary Hellmann added 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Spartans dropped to 5-8 on the year, including a 0-2 mark in conference play, while the Bears raised their record to 11-2, with a 2-0 UAA mark.

The Spartans led by as many as three in the first period, taking an 11-8 advantage with 2:43 remaining in the frame on a pair of free throws by Hageman.  The Bears would score the last three points of the first, tying the game at 11-11 heading into the second.

The end of the first period was part of a larger 9-2 run for Washington that continued into the second, and put the Bears up 17-13 with 8:31 to play in the half.  The Spartans stayed close, pulling within a point, 19-18, on a three pointer by senior Emily Young with 6:25 to play in the period, but the Bears would take their largest lead of the half, in the closing seconds of the period, taking a 28-22 lead into the break.

Hageman led the Spartans with eight points in the first half to go along with four rebounds, while McCoy chipped in with four points, six rebounds and three blocks during the first 20 minutes of play.

The Bears would build their lead to seven in halfway through the third, but CWRU pulled back within a possession after a jumper by Hellmann cut the Wash U. lead to 33-31 with 4:45 left in the third.  The Bears eventually regained an eight-point lead with 41 seconds left in the third, but a jumper by Young as time ran out in the period cut Wash U.'s lead to 42-36 after three.

Hellmann hit a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter and cut the Bears' lead to three, but back-to-back baskets by Wash U. gave the squad a 46-39 advantage at the 8:34 mark.  Hageman responded with a layup and a three-pointer to get the Spartans back within two, 46-44 with 7:50 left in the game.  But, again, the Bears had an answer, going on a 10-0 run to take a 56-44 lead with 3:43 to play.

CWRU rallied late, with a three pointer by Hageman with 40 seconds left cutting the Bears' lead back to five, 57-52, before Wash U. scored five straight to secure the win late.

Amanda Martinez led the Wash U. effort with 15 points and 13 rebounds, with Jordan Thompson scoring an additional 15 and collecting six steals for the Bears.

The Spartans will wrap-up their three-game home stand to start conference play on Sunday, January 17th at 2:00 p.m. against the University of Chicago at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
