Despite senior post Laura Mummey and sophomore forward Kara Hageman scoring in double-digits, the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team suffered a 72-51 loss at Ohio Northern University Wednesday night.
The Spartans fall to 4-6 for the season, while the Polar Bears improve to 8-2 overall.
Mummey led the Spartans with 13 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Hageman contributed 11 points to the CWRU total as well as seven rebounds and two blocks. With nine points, freshman guard Hillary Hellmann also added three rebounds.
Setting the pace for the Polar Bears, Karissa Steffas recorded 14 points and brought down six rebounds. Precious Ramsey and Brooke Espenschied each tallied 13 points.
With an early lead from the Polar Bears, the Spartans attempted to pick up some momentum and pulled within two points at 6-4 with 7:11 left to play in the first quarter. CWRU opened the second quarter with a 4-0 run with a a jump shot and layup from freshman forward Darby Kreienberg to pull within four. The Polar Bears closed the half up 37-19 with a 6-0 run.
In the fourth quarter the Spartans outscored the Polar Bears 18-8 and out-shot their opponent 46.7% to 23.5% from the field, but it was not enough to pull into the lead.
The Spartans will return to the Cleveland area for a 2:00 p.m. game on Monday, January 4 at John Carroll University.
