With a career-high 23 points, freshman guard Hillary Hellmann went five-for-six from the three-point range to lead the Spartans to a 62-51 victory over Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon in Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans have now won three straight to improve to 4-5 overall, while the Ladies dropped to 5-4 for the season.
Along with her 23 points, Hellmann tallied 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Senior forward Laura Mummey turned in 16 points, three steals and three assists. With nine points, sophomore forward Kara Hageman recorded a career-best eight assists and brought down six rebounds. Going two-for-two from behind the arc, freshman guard Alexis Amburgey tallied six points for the Spartans.
In the first half, the Spartans led by as many as six on three occasions. With 2:36 left to play in the first quarter, Hellmann sunk her second three pointer of the day to give CWRU a 12-6 edge. A shot good for three from junior guard Jessica McCoy at 5:58 in the second quarter pushed the Spartans to a 23-17 lead, followed by a layup from Hellmann at 25:19 with just over five minutes to play. The Ladies pushed back scoring a layup at the buzzer, but at the half the Spartans remained ahead by three, 29-26.
The Ladies outscored the Spartans in the third quarter 13-7, and led by as many as four, but the Spartans rallied back with 26 points in the fourth quarter to the Ladies 12. After being down 39-36 at the end of the third quarter, CWRU opened the fourth with a three-pointer from Hageman to tie the game and the Spartans kept the momentum for the rest of the competition.
Center Ifeoma Archimalo tallied 10 points and eight rebounds to pace the Ladies.
The Spartans will return to action on Wednesday, December 30 for their final game of 2015. CWRU will travel to Ohio Northern University with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
