The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team fell 68-60 against the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at the 31st annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Tournament sponsored by BSN Sports at Marietta College on Saturday night in the Ban Johnson Arena.
With the loss the Spartans drop to 1-4 on the season, while the Fightin' Engineers move to a perfect 3-0 overall.
Junior guard Jessica McCoy paced the Spartans with 18 points, five rebounds and four assists. In her season debut, senior forward Laura Mummey recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward Kara Hageman tallied nine points and six rebounds, while junior guard Alex Roth turned in nine points and a team-high three steals.
After the Fightin' Engineers jumped to a 4-0 lead to begin the game, CWRU rallied a 16-0 run spanning just over four minutes featuring seven points from McCoy as well as three points from Hageman, Roth and Mummey. The Spartans opened the second quarter with back-to-back layups from senior guard Emily Young and Hageman for a 22-12 edge with 8:26 left to play in the half. With 5:19 left to play, CWRU stayed ahead 27-19 as McCoy finished a layup and sunk the free throw after being fouled. Rose-Hulman closed the half going on a 14-4 run for a 34-31 lead.
To open the second half, Mummey hit a jumper to pull the Spartans within one of the Fightin' Engineers at 34-33. Rose-Hulman responded with a 5-0 run and would end the third quarter ahead 49-42 and lead through the remainder of the game.
Kristen Belyea led the Fightin' Engineers with 16 points and Josie Schmidt recorded a double-double for Rose-Hulman with 14 points and 15 rebounds.
The Spartans will close out tournament play at 1:00 p.m. at Marietta College on Sunday, November 29 against the Terriers of Hiram College. LIVE STATS will be available for the game and video will be posted when available.
